A 40-year-old male develops gradual onset of fever, profuse bloody diarrhea, over the past 2 weeks associated with tenesmus and abdominal pain. He recently returned from a trip to Guatemala where he visited rural sites. Stool is heme-positive and has a few polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Stools are culture-negative for pathogenic bacteria and are negative for ova and parasites on direct examination. C. difficile toxin assay is negative |
